Ortho-K or Orthokeratology is a revolutionary NON-SURGICAL procedure that eliminates the need for glasses or daytime contact lenses. Dr Bearden ( at Fort Lauderdale Eye Care and Eyewear )is able to improve your vision by gently reshaping your eyes WHILE YOU SLEEP using specially designed therapeutic contact lenses. You just put the specialty fitted contact lenses in at bedtime and when you wake up, you have clear, sharp, natural vision during your waking hours - without the need for glasses or contact lenses.
The process can take from one to four weeks to achieve excellent vision but, some people take as little as one day. The speed depends in part to your original starting prescription. During the first few days of the Ortho-K process while your cornea is being gently reshaped at night - Dr Bearden will give you temporary soft contact lenses to wear during the day so you will be able to function. We only do this until excellent vision is achieved with the final Ortho-K results.
Ortho-K has been FDA approved for over 14 years and it is a very safe and reversible procedure. As with any contact lens - it is important to carefully clean and disinfect the lenses as well as maintain the necessary progress visits.
Ortho-K is great for people who can not wear contact lenses during the day due to allergies, work in dirty / dusty environments, loves being in and around the water (soft contact lenses are NOT supposed to be worn in and around water - including the beach, shower, hot tub, pools etc), someone who wants to wake up in the middle of the night and see clearly without searching for their glasses, people who dislike wearing glasses and/or contact lenses etc.
CHILDREN AND ORTHO-K
Nearsightedness (Myopia) is rapidly becoming an epidemic and it is expected that 50% of the world's population will be nearsighted / myopic by 2020. This is due in part to our children spending many hours on the computer / digital devices, reading and studying instead of playing outdoors.
Increasing nearsightedness is not only a problem causing blurry vision but, more importantly, it can lead to sight threatening conditions like retinal detachments and glaucoma. The earlier a child becomes nearsighted - the more likely it can progress to dangerous levels.
Studies have shown that Ortho-K lenses can slow down and / or stop the progression of nearsightedness. Many studies document that children who wear Ortho-K lenses experience little to no myopic progression during treatment.
Dr Dawn Bearden starts seeing children and fitting them with
Ortho-K lenses at age 10.
